Alsum Farms & Produce recognized for role in Global Books donation program

Antigo, WI — February 7, 2012 — On Monday, January 30, the Rotary Books for the World program in Wisconsin celebrated its one-millionth pound of books shipped from Wisconsin — no small accomplishment. Rick Kantner, Director of Sales & Marketing for Alsum Farms & Produce, Inc., was honored to be a part of that celebration and to be recognized, on behalf of Alsum, for Alsum’s role in the global donation program. Since 2007, Alsum has taken part in 22 of the 24 book shipments, helping load books into some of Alsum’s fleet of trucks.

The Rotary Books for the World program in Wisconsin began as a local literacy initiative in 2005 and now encompasses libraries and schools throughout the state. Gently used books are collected at schools, colleges, book resellers and libraries across the state, with the effort coordinated by the Madison Breakfast Rotary. The organization also collects educational materials such as computers, desks, tables and chairs, as well as wheelchairs. All donations are shipped to southern Africa, Central and South America, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India to assist them in their efforts to increase education and literacy and improve health.

Attendees of the Books for the World celebration watched as the one-millionth pound of books was loaded at the Middleton Business Park onto a semi-truck headed for Houston, Texas.
