Xcel Energy: Public open houses provide opportunity to discuss proposed transmission project in Sawyer County

EAU CLAIRE, WIS.– Several open house events to discuss Xcel Energy’s plans for a project to strengthen the transmission system and improve electric reliability in northwestern Wisconsin are planned for the second week of May. The public is invited to attend any of the following open houses:

* Wednesday, May 11, from 1:30 to 4 p.m. or 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Veteran’s Community Center in Hayward

* Thursday, May 12, from 1:30 to 4 p.m. or 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Radisson Community Center in Radisson

* Saturday, May 14, from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Flat Creek Eatery in Hayward

The proposed project includes adding a 161 kV line to the existing 69 kV transmission line between Xcel Energy’s Stone Lake and Couderay substations. The project length will be approximately 20 miles, depending on the final route selected by the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin (PSCW). In addition to upgrading the transmission line, Xcel Energy proposes moving the Couderay substation to a more open area, across the road from its current location.

“As the area grows as a year-round destination so does development and the need for electricity,” said Brad Nelson, project manager, Transmission. “Rebuilding the approximately 50-year-old transmission line and adding the new 161 kV line will strengthen the reliability of the electric system in the area.”

During the open house events, area landowners and other interested residents will learn about the proposed transmission line, see detailed maps and have an opportunity to ask questions. Xcel Energy representatives will be available throughout the open house events. There will be no formal presentation.

After receiving input from local residents and officials, Xcel Energy will file a formal application with the PSCW. The final decision on the transmission route will be made by the PSCW in late 2012.
