Travel not advised as winter storm moves across northern part of the state

Due to inclement weather, permits for oversize vehicle operation are temporarily administratively suspended in the following northwest Wisconsin counties: Ashland, Bayfield, Burnett, Douglas and Iron. This inclement weather suspension is in effect from 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 22 until sunrise, Friday, March 25, 2011.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation notes that even if a county is not one of the five counties affected by this temporary suspension, no permit is valid during inclement weather.

Because of strong winds and blowing snow, travel in Ashland, Bayfield, Burnett, Douglas and Iron is discouraged for all commercial motor vehicle traffic. Double-trailer combinations, unladen/empty rigs and light loads are strongly encouraged to find an alternate route or delay operation and/or lay up until weather and road conditions improve.

Motorists should monitor the state’s 511 Traveler Information System for winter road conditions by dialing 511 or going to http://www.511wi.gov. They may also want to check the National Weather Service’s Website: http://www.weather.gov.
