Madison— The WEA Trust was chosen by the Wisconsin Group Insurance Board (GIB) on August 23, 2011, to be in the State Group Health Insurance Program (state health plan) for public employees in 49 counties. The Trust was selected by the GIB as a Tier 1 option, the lowest cost tier, demonstrating the Trust’s price competitiveness in Wisconsin’s health insurance market. With the expansion to 49 counties in 2012, the WEA Trust covers more counties than any other insurer in the state plan.

Seven more counties—Rock, Jefferson, Dodge, Columbia, Wood, Portage, and Marathon—and thousands of additional providers join the WEA Trust Preferred Provider Plan (PPP) East Network, which now totals 31 counties and covers much of east-central Wisconsin. WEA Trust PPP Northwest is a new option for state and local government employees in 18 counties in northwest Wisconsin, including Dunn County where the WEA Trust is the only qualified Tier 1 health plan.

In order to be placed in Tier 1, the Trust must be extremely competitive in pricing for the Uniform Benefits offered in the state health plan.

“For more than 40 years, the Trust has provided a top-rated health plan and superior customer service to public school employees,” said Mark Moody, WEA Trust President and CEO. “We began the process to enter the state plan in 2009 in order to adapt to the changing market and secure a strong future protecting the health and financial security of our members. We are very pleased with our initial enrollment in 2011 and are happy to be broadening our coverage to serve even more public employees in 2012.”

Current state plan subscribers may switch from their existing health plan into the Trust PPP during the state’s open enrollment period in October. School districts can also choose to enroll their employees in the state health plan.
