UW-Oshkosh: Veterans Resource Center dedicated Nov. 7 during Veterans Week 2011

Chancellor Richard Wells and Secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs John Scocos will help dedicate the new center in Dempsey Hall 130 at 1 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 7. It’s just one of several events scheduled at UW Oshkosh Veterans Week 2011.

UW Oshkosh (Nov. 4) — An innovative new resource center designed to support military veterans entering or coming back to school at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh will be dedicated Monday, Nov. 7 as kickoff to a week’s worth of events during UW Oshkosh Veterans Week 2011.

Chancellor Richard Wells and Secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs John Scocos will help dedicate the new center:

* 1 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 7

* Dempsey Hall, Room 130

The new veterans center has been developed and is billed as a “one-stop shop” for veterans, housing the Veterans Benefits Counselor and Veterans Resource Coordinator.

It further features:

* A study lounge for veterans, with a computer lab and printer and a library of reading and support materials for veterans.

* A location for external service providers such as the VA Hospital, counseling service and other veteran service organizations to hold hours on campus.

* Suitable space for internal offices, such as advising, counseling, career services and other offices to also deliver service and feature regular service hours.

* A peer mentoring program, which will be started this coming spring. It will include vets mentoring vets on how they succeeded and share educational and career-pursuit tips.

* Space for Veteran’s Club meetings.

* Home for a vets hotline, through which veterans can get answers to any and all questions they have. UW Oshkosh encourages them to access staff who can help them get the answers they seek.

The veterans center dedication kicks off a series of events during UW Oshkosh Veterans Week 2011:

Monday, Nov. 7

* 1 p.m. — Chancellor Wells and Secretary of Wisconsin Department of Veteran Affairs, John Scocos will be dedicating the new Veterans Resource Center (Dempsey Hall 130).

* Flags on Dempsey Hall front lawn honoring veterans, spouses and children of veterans.

* Veterans can stop by the Veteran’s Resource Center all week to receive coupons to the Reeve Union Marketplace and Titan Underground.

* Veteran’s Club Video Game Tournament, Titan Underground 6:00-9:00 PM.

Tuesday, Nov. 8

* Retired Lt. Col. Jeffrey Schulz (http://www.yellowribbon.mil/cfe/cadre-of-speakers/family-readiness/product/view/8/23) will present two sessions regarding veterans and their transition from military life to civilian life

* 4 p.m. –Dempsey 130 (Veterans Resource Center) specific session for UW Oshkosh veterans

* 6 p.m. –Reeve Union 214 session for campus community

Wednesday, Nov. 9

* UW Oshkosh Veterans’ Exhibit opening reception 1:00-3:00 Reeve Union Steinhilber Gallery. Exhibit runs from November 7-23. UW Oshkosh alum and veteran, Amanda Leigh will speak at art exhibit.

Thursday, Nov. 10

* 6 p.m. –Veterans Resource Center sponsoring film, The Welcome in Reeve Union Theater (http://www.thewelcomethemovie.com/)

* UW Oshkosh Veterans Panel/Counseling Center to discuss movie immediately following movie.

* Both student veteran and faculty/staff veterans will speak about their experiences and answer questions.

Friday, Nov. 11 –Veterans Day 11/11/11

* 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. — Reeve Union Concourse-UW Oshkosh administrators will be handing out flags, buttons and thanking our veterans for their service. UWO Veterans Club will be handing out popcorn to everyone

* 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. — Veteran’s Presentation and Panel Discussion, Steinhilber Art Gallery located in Reeve Memorial Union. Reception to follow.

* Flags on Dempsey Hall front lawn honoring veterans, spouses and children of veterans.
