Komen Madison Changing Name to Reflect Expanded Service Area

Madison — In order to reach more people with education and programming fighting breast cancer, the Madison Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® will now be known as the South Central Wisconsin Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®. The change of name reflects an expanded service area for the local Komen Affiliate to promise funding for breast health and breast cancer education, screening, treatment and survivorship programming beyond Dane County.

“When we wrote our original application 14 years ago, to host a Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Madison, all we wanted to do was have a Race and raise money for the mission of Komen- we had no idea that Komen Madison would evolve into the important and impactful organization it has become for women and their families in our community, “said Executive Director and founding Board member, Michelle Heitzinger.

The expansion strategy will take place over three years. While Dane county remains part of the service area, the three-year plan will add two counties per year beginning with Rock and Sauk Counties in 2011, Dodge and Iowa counties in 2012 and Columbia and Green in 2013. Also, in 2013, the Komen Southeast Wisconsin Affiliate will release Jefferson County to the Komen South Central Wisconsin Affiliate to complete its service area. “This has been part of the Board’s strategic planning process for several years but we have not had the staff and capacity to make this process happen before now, according to Heitzinger.

The time is right and we have staff in place to make this expansion a reality,” said Terry Nelson. Board President and a Komen Madison Affiliate founding member. “Our Komen South Central Wisconsin Affiliate will be able to serve more women in need of breast health and breast cancer services in our surrounding counties where those services are currently few or non-existent”, Nelson continued.

Last April the Affiliate awarded a record amount of $708,958, to 14 area non-profit organizations that provide breast health and breast cancer services primarily for un-insured, under-insured and low income women in Dane County.
