St. Norbert College: Former Syracuse football star to come and speak

Monday, Oct. 3, at 6 p.m.

DE PERE, WIS.: Don McPherson, Heisman Trophy runner-up in 1987 while playing quarterback at Syracuse, will lecture on dating violence in a presentation titled: “You Throw Like a Girl,” Monday, Oct. 3, at 6 p.m. in Fort Howard Theatre, in the F. K. Bemis International Center located off third Street on the St. Norbert College campus. The event is free and open to the public.

McPherson uses the power and appeal of sports to address complex social issues. This discussion is directed primarily at men and focuses on language such as “you throw like a girl” that sets a standard on the narrow expectations of masculinity while simultaneously establishing an understanding that girls and women are “less than” men. The presentation focuses on nurturing positive language and understanding of masculine identity.

McPherson was a unanimous All-America quarterback and captain of the undefeated 1987 Syracuse football team. He is also a veteran of the NFL and Canadian Football League.

At Syracuse, McPherson set 22 school records, led the NCAA in passing and won more than 18 national “player of the year” awards. In 2009 McPherson, was enshrined into the College Football Hall of Fame.
