Wausau, Wis. – Patrick R. Birkett, Risk Control Manager for Miron Construction Co., Inc., recently completed all requirements to obtain the designation of Associate Safety Professional (ASP).

This highly respected designation is awarded to individuals who meet academic requirements and have passed the first of two rigorous examinations. Upon passing the first examination, individuals receive the interim designation of ASP to indicate their progress towards the Certified Safety Professionalâ (CSPâ). The first examination covers basic and applied sciences, safety program management and evaluation, equipment and facilities, fire prevention and protection, environmental aspects, system safety and product safety.

Certified Safety Professionals specialize in protecting workers, the public, property, and the environment by identifying, evaluating, and controlling hazards. The ASP must complete professional safety experience requirements and pass the Comprehensive Practice examination to obtain the CSP certification. Steve Schoolcraft, BCSP Examination Director, said, “Becoming a CSP elevates a safety professional to the top of his or her field.”

The Board of Certified Safety Professionals, governed by 13 directors with seven membership organizations, establishes standards for and verifies minimum competency in professional safety practice. BCSP also evaluates CSPs for compliance with re-certification requirements. Since 1969, almost 20,000 individuals have achieved Certified Safety Professional certification. Currently, more than 11,000 hold the CSP. BCSP is a nationally accredited, non-profit corporation chartered in Illinois, with headquarters in Savoy. More information about BCSP, the CSP and professional safety practice is available at http://www.bcsp.org.
