HR Society Sponsors “One Day to Make a Difference” Program

On Friday, May 6, the Metro Milwaukee Society of Human Resource Management is sponsoring a program designed to assist Milwaukee youth with critical job skills. More than 50 volunteers and nearly 200 students are expected to participate. Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett will greet and provide opening comments to volunteers at 8:30 a.m. Students arrive at 9:00 a.m. The program, which will be held at the Milwaukee Center for Independence (2020 W. Wells Street, Milwaukee, WI), concludes at 3:00 p.m.

The program is one in a series of volunteer programs being coordinated by the Wisconsin State Council of the Society of Human Resource Management. Under the banner of “One Day to Make a Difference,” the Council was presented a Pinnacle Award in 2010 from the Society of Human Resource Management in Alexandria, VA. The Pinnacle Award is the highest achievement awarded to a SHRM chapter or state council for their impact on its community and the HR profession.

The program makes a tremendous difference in the lives of Milwaukee-area youth as HR professionals lend their insight into the job market to young people who are taking their first steps toward jobs and careers. Volunteers will coach young people in the following areas: networking, resume building, social media, interviewing preparation and skills, phone etiquette, job search basics, choosing a career path, and the creation of an “elevator speech” to grab the attention of potential employers.

Founded in 1925, Metro Milwaukee SHRM is a professional membership organization for individuals in the human resource management profession. It is the local affiliate of the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM), the world’s largest association devoted to human resource management. Metro Milwaukee SHRM is one of the largest SHRM-affiliates in the United States, with membership of more than 650 human resource professionals.
