Former school district office building to house charter school

(Appleton, WI) The Kimberly Area School District (KASD) has selected Hoffman LLC, a planning, design, and construction firm in Appleton, to renovate the former school district administrative office building at 217 East Kimberly Avenue into the district’s new Kornerstone Charter School.

“The building has a long history in the community,” explained Kimberly Superintendent Bob Mayfield. “From 1933 to1970 it served as the Kimberly Village Hall, housing the library, fire and police departments, offices, and community center. The title was transferred to the school district in 1970 when construction of the current village complex was completed.”

Hoffman previously partnered with the KASD on the design and construction of Kimberly High School (2001) and Woodland School (2006). Hoffman will provide design and construction management services for the Kornerstone Charter School project. The school, which will house approximately 60 students, three teachers, and administrative staff, is scheduled for completion in August 2011.

The design plan for the Kornerstone Charter School incorporates the original finishes (hardwood and terrazzo floors) and the removal of the temporary office walls to recreate the original room design.

“The goal of the renovation is to create a new home for the Kornerstone Charter School, making design and energy-efficient improvements to the former village hall while maintaining the historical integrity of the building,” said Tom Jesse, Hoffman senior project architect.

The KASD administration staff has relocated to 425 South Washington Street in Combined Locks. U.S. Venture, Inc. generously donated their former corporate headquarters at that location to the school district. Hoffman managed the renovation of the building by creating new office spaces, replacing windows, and upgrading the electrical and HVAC systems to make the facility as energy efficient as possible.

“The planning and quality of the two projects exceeded expectations, and it is a pleasure to work with Hoffman again,” Mayfield added.
