MILWAUKEE, WI – (February 2011) Historic Milwaukee, Inc (HMI) announces the neighborhood of Riverwest as the location for the 30th anniversary of its Spaces &Traces tour taking place Saturday, May 21st.

Riverwest, known for bringing an eclectic community together, will open the doors to several of its historic homes and cottages that were built by early German and Polish settlers. Guided building and home tours, lectures, and an extensive souvenir booklet will reveal the history, architecture, and evolution of this unique neighborhood.

Riverwest: A Community History, a book written by Thomas L . Tolan, describes this neighborhood as politically active, artistically alive, racially diverse and uniquely intertwined with the river.

Improvements can be seen along the Milwaukee River and new shops now thrive along Humboldt Boulevard and Center Street. With this new life there is a resurgent interest in the historic buildings of this vibrant residential neighborhood.

The Milwaukee River on the east and south, Capitol Drive on the north and N. Holton Street on its west form the borders of Riverwest. This spring open house is one of two major fundraising events that subsidize nearly 500 tours and events organized by HMI throughout the year.
