Animated video tells typical tale of shelter’s success

(Milwaukee) November 2, 2011 – Visitors to The Guest House of Milwaukee’s website are getting an unusual glimpse inside Milwaukee’s largest publicly funded emergency shelter this month, through a unique video that tells the story of Derrick, a fictional but typical homeless adult who finds shelter, and dignity, at The Guest House of Milwaukee.

“The animated whiteboard video is part of our 2011 fundraising effort,” says Cindy Krahenbuhl, Executive Director. “Even though fictional, Derrick’s story is not unusual. His story – or one very similar – has been seen at the Guest House every day since our inception in 1982.” On average, Guest House provides shelter for 86 adult men every evening, while also operating approximately 270 scattered site permanent housing units.

The character and video were created by Dean Group Media and Story Vision Video working in conjunction with Guest House staff. It is available for viewing at http://www.guesthouseofmilwaukee.org, and as the featured video during November at Story Vision Video.

“The video provides a concise look at the men we help and how we help them to help themselves,” said Krahenbuhl. “We’re far more than a shelter. We’ve helped thousands of men get back on their feet through education, training, case management and addiction treatment. Our goal is to eradicate homelessness.”

“We’re extremely pleased to be able to help tell the story of The Guest House of Milwaukee through Derrick’s Story,” said Dennis Dean, Managing Partner of Dean Group Media and the creator of Story Vision Video. “Guest House has an amazing story and is a wonderful example of how dedicated individuals can help others, simply by helping them to help themselves. They show men like Derrick how it is possible to restore their pride and dignity and be productive members of society.”

The Guest House of Milwaukee is a not-for-profit 501©(3) corporation. All donations are tax-deductible. Guest House hopes to raise $110,000 during its campaign.
