Madison – In response to Mayor Paul Soglin’s decision to substantially reduce previously approved TIF dollars for the Edgewater Hotel redevelopment project, Greater Madison Chamber of Commerce President Jennifer Alexander released the following statement:

The Mayor’s decision today to reduce previously approved TIF assistance for the Edgewater Hotel renovation from his Capital Budget sends a chilling message to the business community.

After more than a year of public debate, the Common Council approved the visionary project and agreed that TIF assistance was an appropriate investment because the renovation would create jobs, restore blighted property, and create new public access to the lake.

Failing to follow through on commitments made sends the wrong message to individuals and businesses that are looking to invest in Madison.

We are disappointed and will continue to encourage city leaders to support this important project.
