MADISON – Governor Scott Walker announced today that the City of Elroy, Juneau County, will receive a $373,000 grant from the Community Development Block Grant – Public Facilities (CDBG-PF) program administered by the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC).

“I’m pleased the state is able to assist Elroy in funding this project,” said Governor Walker. “Access to safe drinking water is certainly a basic and critical element in a community’s infrastructure, and it’s important that this plan move forward.”

The grant will help finance a $1.18 million replacement of one of two wells in Elroy. One well is located in a flood plain and is currently operated on a stand-by basis only due to contamination from the flood events of 2008. The City of Elroy will construct a new well, well house and water connections outside of the flood zone, with construction expected to be completed in fall of 2012.

The CDBG-PF program is a versatile financing tool for general-purpose local units of government in need of funds to undertake needed infrastructure and public building projects. The program is designed to enhance the vitality of a community by undertaking public investment that contributes to its overall community and economic development.

The WEDC is Wisconsin’s lead economic development agency. Created in statute as a public authority, the WEDC is responsible for economic development activities previously administered by the Department of Commerce, a state agency eliminated on July 1, 2011.
