Family Farm Defenders, a national farmer and consumer advocacy group based in Madison, WI and internationally known for espousing the principles of food sovereignty is seeking nominations of beginning farmers who best uphold these principle to be considered for a public prize and cash reward. The award is named in honor of FFD’s founder and long time activist, John Kinsman.

Family Farm Defenders is a member of La Via Campesina, the largest umbrella organization for peasant farmers, farm workers, fishers, hunters, gatherers, foresters, and indigenous peoples in the world, which first conceptualized food sovereignty back in 1996. Food sovereignty is now included in the constitutions of several countries and includes seven guiding principles: food is a basic human right, agrarian reform, protecting natural resources, reorganizing food trade, ending the globalization of hunger, social peace, and democratic control. Winners of the 2011 John Kinsman Beginning Farmer Food Sovereignty Prize will be announced on Sat. October 1st and receive their award at an FFD fundraising reception and local food banquet at the Goodman Center (149 Waubesa in Madison) on Sat. November 12th.
