MILWAUKEE – The Center for Veterans Issues (CVI), in partnership with Cardinal Capital Management, will be holding a grand opening ceremony to recognize the completion of the Thomas H. Wynn Memorial Apartments: Veterans Manor on Monday, May 30 at 11:00 am at the Marquette University High School Athletic Fields at 35th Street and Wisconsin Avenue in Milwaukee.

Scheduled speakers at the grand opening ceremony include Governor Scott Walker, Congresswoman Gwen Moore, County Executive Chris Abele, Mayor Tom Barrett, Alderman Bob Bauman, Representative Leon Young, and WHEDA Executive Director Wyman Winston.

“Veterans Manor” will allow low-income veterans to live independently in safe, secure, permanent, supportive housing while offering them the individual support systems necessary to maintain independence. Veterans Manor is a 52-unit apartment building, with one-bedroom homes of either 580 or 617 square feet each on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th stories. Each resident will have a fully functional kitchen, a living room area, fully or partially handicapped accessible bathroom and a large bedroom. Supportive services available to the tenants include: case management, employment preparation support, vocational training, employment placement support, benefits counseling and preparation, mental and physical care, addiction counseling, life and soft skills training, parenting, family support and much more. The 1st story or ground level will be split, with tenant amenities and building operations occupying approximately one half. The remaining space will be occupied by a commercial kitchen leased to and operated by The Milwaukee Center For Independence and a storefront bistro style “Troop Café” owned and operated by CVI and its veterans. “Troop Café” will open Summer 2011 and will serve affordable, high-quality meals to the community. The Center for Veterans Issues is doing premiere work reintegrating homeless veterans, their families, and society’s most needy individuals back into the public to achieve a life of self-sufficiency and hope, and it continues this good work with the opening of Veterans Manor.

*National veteran’s rights activist Thomas H. Wynn, Sr. founded the Center for Veterans Issues. Wynn served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
