As US Senate votes to Stop Unfair Chinese Currency Manipulation, GOP Senate Candidates Remain Silent

Time for Republicans to Come Clean: Wisconsin Jobs and Middle Class Families, or the Chinese Economy

MILWAUKEE — Tammy Baldwin today reissued her call for the Republican candidates for the US Senate to support legislation that stands up to unfair Chinese currency manipulation that hurts American jobs, businesses and middle class families.

“Currency manipulation is one of many unfair trade and economic policies that gives China a slanted playing field and kill American businesses and jobs,” said Baldwin. “We need to stand up to these underhanded tactics that gut key sectors of the American economy and hurt workers and their families. This bill should be a slam dunk, but Republican leadership and the conservative special interests are standing in the way all in the name of rigid conservative ideology. It’s time for the the Republican candidates to stop hiding and tell Wisconsin workers and families whose side they’re on.”

The US Senate is expected to vote later today on the Currency Exchange Rate Oversight Reform Act of 2011, which applies tariffs on imports from countries like China that deliberately keeps currency undervalued to gain unfair, artificial competitive economic advantages. The powerful and extreme conservative DC special interest group Club for Growth is pressuring Republicans to oppose the bill, and GOP Senate Leadership appears to be caving.

Baldwin first issued her challenge to the GOP candidates for US Senate from Wisconsin last week when the legislation first hit the floor. [http://wi.tammybaldwin.com/pr111011]
