American Speed Association: SCAG Power Equipment “Dixieland 100” headlines as Wisconsin International Raceway season opener

May 6, 2011 – The American Speed Association® Kwik Trip Midwest Tour presented by ECHO Outdoor Power Equipment and GrandStay Hospitality will return to Wisconsin International Raceway on Sunday, May 15th with the 30th Annual “SCAG Power Equipment Dixieland 100” presented by Ganrud Chevrolet. This event, historically held on a Tuesday night, will now be the track’s 2011 season opener.

Opening day for WIR will begin with qualifying at 11:30AM, an on track autograph session at 1:00PM followed by racing at 2:00PM. The ASA Midwest Tour super late models will also be joined by the ASA Midwest Sunoco Sportsman Tour and the ASA Midwest SCAG Truck Tour to help kick off the season for WIR.

On Sunday, children 12 and under are FREE, while adult admission (13 & older) is ONLY $15. The ASA Midwest Tour understands the need for fans to save money. So fans will be able to see an afternoon filled with high-intensity, ASA Midwest Tour, Sportsman Tour and Truck Tour racing for one low ticket price.

All three divisions will also have an open practice on Saturday, May 14th from 12:00PM-5:00PM with free general admission for the fans.

The first Dixieland event was held on a Sunday with former NASCAR great, Neil Bonnett as the featured driver. Over the years many NASCAR drivers have raced at the D-shaped oval, including Kevin Harvick, Mark Martin, Kyle Busch and last year’s winner, Johnny Sauter.

Ask just about any NASCAR driver and they will tell you that they got their start at their local short track, whether dirt or asphalt. For many, it is a comfort to go back to where it all began, regardless of how much has changed.

The late John McKarns had the idea many years ago to have an event in the Wisconsin area that was not a traditional Saturday night race and would offer the opportunity for NASCAR drivers to come and run with local short track racers.

As the Dixieland event continued to grow, it became one of the most sought after asphalt events in Wisconsin. Many Southern drivers were making the trip for the then 250 lap, green-flag pit stop event because it became known as one of the richest days in Wisconsin asphalt racing.

As we all know, times have changed, the economy has changed, and racing has changed. But one thing is for sure, this year’s Dixieland event as WIR’s season opener will be an event that will bring some of the most exciting ASAMT racing of the season!
