Madison – Five statewide partners will host a series of Economic Summits to focus public, media, opinion leader and policy-maker attention on how to reduce unemployment and energize Wisconsin’s ability to grow and maintain a strong economy. The first Economic Summit is dedicated to developing comprehensive and cohesive strategies for how to increase the number of good-paying jobs Wisconsin needs; developing and sustaining an entrepreneurial and business friendly environment; and generating the angel and venture capital needed to encourage and support business start-ups and expansions.

Who: University of Wisconsin System, Competitive Wisconsin, Inc., the Wisconsin Technology Council, the Wisconsin Way and the Wisconsin Higher Education Business Roundtable.

What: Summit I — Creating the Economic Vision; New Strategies for Economic Development and Competitiveness — of the 2010 Wisconsin Economic Summit Series.

When: Monday, August 2, 2010 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Where: Radisson Paper Valley Hotel in Appleton, Wis., 333 W. College Ave.

Why: Most analysts now agree that the next governor and new legislature will start their 2011–13 budget negotiations more than $2 billion in the hole. In this financially limited arena, our elected leaders must identify and prioritize the issues and make the decisions that will affect our future. The people, schools, farms and businesses of Wisconsin need for our next generation of leaders to have the best advice and counsel available as they assume their responsibility to lead Wisconsin forward. The Summits will develop positive new strategies for spurring significant economic growth, balancing the state’s responsibility to address the needs of its citizens with the ability of its citizens to pay for the services, and finding common ground for how best to move Wisconsin forward in the 21st century.

The 2010 Wisconsin Economic Summit Series is sponsored by Alliant Energy Corp., American Transmission Company, AT&T Wisconsin, Aurora Health Care, Baker Tilly, MillerCoors, Wood Communications Group, Competitive Wisconsin, The Wisconsin Credit Union League, Wisconsin Bankers Association, Wisconsin Builders Association, Wisconsin Counties Association, Wisconsin Economic Development Association, Wisconsin Education Association Council, Wisconsin Hospital Association, Wisconsin REALTORS® Association and the Wisconsin Technology Council.
