Major organizations and institutions join in unique public-private effort to identify new strategies and approaches to Wisconsin challenges and opportunities

MADISON – Five statewide partners announced Tuesday they will host a series of Economic Summits to focus public, media, opinion leader and policy-maker attention on how to reduce unemployment and energize Wisconsin’s ability to grow and maintain a strong economy.

Hosted by the University of Wisconsin System, Competitive Wisconsin Inc., the Wisconsin Technology Council, the Wisconsin Way and the Wisconsin Higher Education Business Roundtable, the summits will also examine what such a strategic effort to strengthen Wisconsin’s job creation capacity and improve the state’s competitiveness might mean as elected officials and policy-makers approach the 2011-13 Wisconsin State Budget.

The 2010 Wisconsin Economic Summit Series includes three summits, each with a specific focus and objectives:

Summit One, Creating the Economic Vision, New Strategies for Economic Development and Competitiveness, will be held in Appleton, Wis., on Aug. 2, 2010. It is dedicated to developing comprehensive and cohesive strategies for how to increase the number of good-paying jobs Wisconsin needs; developing and sustaining an entrepreneurial and business friendly environment; and generating the angel and venture capital needed to encourage and support business start-ups and expansions.

Summit Two, Managing the State Budget Deficit, will be held in La Crosse, Wis., on Aug. 26, 2010. It is dedicated to developing options that address the major challenges and opportunities facing Wisconsin’s new governor and Legislature as they begin their deliberations on the 2011-13 state budget.

Summit Three, Moving Wisconsin Forward, will be held in Milwaukee, Wis., on Oct. 5, 2010. It will concentrate on producing comprehensive strategic briefing papers and recommendations for Wisconsin’s new governor and administration and the 2011-13 Wisconsin State Legislature on the critical issues related to creating jobs, jump starting and growing Wisconsin’s economy, and addressing the state’s major financial challenges and opportunities.

Gubernatorial candidates Tom Barrett, Mark Neumann and Scott Walker have each been invited to address all three summits.
