Statewide student research projects in sustainable water stewardship will be showcased at the 2010 Wisconsin High School Conference on the Environment, “Our Wonderful Waters: Challenges and Opportunities for Wisconsin’s Students,” at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Wednesday, November 17.
More than 200 Wisconsin and Minnesota students and teachers will attend the conference, hosted by the Wisconsin Center for Environmental Education at UWSP since 1992. It will be held in the Dreyfus University Center. The morning keynote address will be presented by Victoria Rydberg, environmental education consultant for the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, at 9:15 a.m. in the Laird Room. Student exhibits will be displayed from 10:35–11 a.m.
“The best of the best environmental science teachers and students in the state will be at the conference,” said Rydberg. Water will be the most critical issue in the future; it will be more valuable than oil, gold or diamonds. Students need to understand this water issue on a broad scale and be able to look at it from multiple perspectives; they are our future leaders.”
Conference speakers include natural resource and environmental education professionals and student presenters highlighting projects implemented at their schools. With the help of Wisconsin Public Service and UWSP, the conference will be powered by 100 percent NatureWise clean, green energy. Financial support for conducting and attending the conference was received from the Wisconsin Center for Environmental Education, The Nature Conservancy, UW-Extension Lakes program, and the Conserve School at Land O’Lakes.
