Oakfield, Wilson Elementary earn prestigious national award

NEW NORTH, September 9, 2010 – Oakfield Elementary School in Oakfield and Wilson Elementary School in Neenah have been recognized as National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2010 by US Secretary of Education Arne Duncan.

The two schools – in Fond du Lac and Outagamie Counties, respectively – are among 304 elementary, middle, and high schools nationwide to receive the award, and among eight in Wisconsin.

The Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors both public and private schools based on one of two criteria: either the schools rank among the state’s highest performing based on state or national assessments, or at least 40% of the schools’ students come from disadvantaged backgrounds and the schools improve performance to high levels on those assessments.

Oakfield was recognized as a high performing school, and Wilson was recognized as an improving school. The two schools, along with the other winners, will be honored at an awards ceremony on November 15 and 16 in Washington, D.C.

“Congratulations to Wilson and Oakfield Elementary on winning such a prestigious award,” said Jerry Murphy, Executive Director of the New North, Inc. “These two schools perfectly encapsulate the excellent educational opportunities that exist throughout the region, making the New North an ideal place to raise a family.”
