“Choosing the Right Waterfront Property,” a guide for purchasing lake or riverfront property, has just been published by UW-Extension and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

Lynn Markham, land use specialist for the Center for Land Use Education (CLUE) located in the College of Natural Resources at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP), is one of the lead authors of this timely publication.

“This guide is intended to help prospective waterfront property owners make informed choices when they choose waterfront property,” said Markham. “Potential waterfront property owners can use this guide to think about what type of lake or river fits well with their lifestyle, interests, activities and budget. The guide also suggests key questions about lakes and rivers to ask before buying. Two valuable resources to help answer these questions are local lake specialists with DNR, and county land and water conservation staff. Investing time to learn about the lake or river, its watershed, the community, and the local land use plans and regulations can provide large dividends by enriching your long-term waterfront experience.”

The guide provides ideas to consider before you start your property search, factors to help a buyer decide on the right lake or river, and considerations to help you find the right lake or river property.

The guide can be viewed and printed from the UW-Extension Lakes Web site at http://www.uwsp.edu/cnr/uwexlakes/publications. Printed copies are free except for mailing cost and can be ordered online or by calling 715-346-2116.
