Quarles & Brady: Fortney one of the few attorneys in state to earn LEED certification

MADISON, Wis. (August 4, 2009) — The national law firm of Quarles & Brady LLP announced that Matthew D. Fortney, an attorney with the firm’s Environmental Practice, has become one of a select group of attorneys in Wisconsin to become a LEED-certified accredited professional (LEED AP). Fortney is one of only three Wisconsin attorneys who is a LEED AP, according to the Green Building Certification Institute.

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system, developed by the U.S. Green Building Council, is a nationally-recognized third-party rating system for the design, construction and operation of energy-efficient, low-environmental impact buildings. A growing number of cities and states now requires, or provides incentive for, new commercial projects to become LEED certified.

“There is a growing demand to incorporate sustainability, green building practices and environmental stewardship in nearly every industry today, and knowledge of these practices will be valuable to the Firm’s current and future clients,” said Fortney.

At the Firm, Fortney is a member of the firm’s Clean Energy, Climate Change and Sustainability industry group and co-chair of the Real Estate Group’s Alternative Energy subgroup. He earned his law degree, magna cum laude, from Northwestern University School of Law. He also holds a B.S. degree in civil engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington and an M.S. degree in environmental geotechnical engineering from Northwestern University. He is a member of the Wisconsin Green Building Alliance and a graduate of Leadership Greater Madison 15.
