MILWAUKEE – North Shore Bank today announced it has opened an in-school branch, “North Shore Grant Bank,” at Grant Elementary School, an MPS school on Milwaukee’s South Side. The branch, to be staffed by 7th- and 8th-graders from the school with guidance from staff at North Shore Bank’s Jackson Park office, is aimed at helping young students develop solid financial skills that will benefit them throughout their lives.

“Promoting financial literacy at an early age, and then providing kids with a fun, interactive opportunity to put their budding financial skills to work, is the best way to create money-savvy adults,” said Cennita Jordon, manager of North Shore Bank’s Jackson Park branch. “North Shore Bank has placed a high value on financial education for more than 85 years, and we’re excited to partner with Grant Elementary School to create this terrific learning experience for local students.”

North Shore Grant Bank celebrated its grand opening this morning with students using a giant pair of scissors to cut through a ribbon of money — $50, which North Shore Bank donated to the school’s Library program. The school-based bank has a special, custom-designed window just outside the Grant cafeteria and will be open for two hours every Wednesday during the school year.

Grant’s K-8 students, as well as their parents and teachers, can use the bank to open accounts, make deposits and withdrawals and more. The minimum deposit is $1 and the accounts can be accessed at any North Shore Bank branch. Bank staff will also provide periodic classroom instruction on financial literacy topics including managing an allowance, developing financial goals and budgets, understanding bank services and managing debt.

“North Shore Grant Bank will help teach our kids to make the right financial choices at an early age,” said Donald Wojczulis, principal of Grant Elementary School. “That’s an essential life lesson, and the earlier we can start teaching it, the better. This is a great opportunity for our students and their families.”

Grant Elementary School is located at 2920 W. Grant St. in the City of Milwaukee. North Shore Bank’s Jackson Park branch is at 4230 W. Oklahoma Ave.
