Vela Systems to Speak at 2008 Tekla North American Users Meeting

Co-Founder Josh Kanner to Present with Tekla’s Stacy Scopano on the Use of Field BIM and RFID to Build the New Meadowlands Stadium in New Jersey; Presentation Takes Place Friday, August 22 at 1:00 p.m.

BURLINGTON, Mass., Aug. 21 /PRNewswire/ — Vela Systems announced today that Josh Kanner, its co-founder and vice president of marketing, will give a presentation at the 2008 Tekla North American Users Meeting in Milwaukee, Wisconsin at the Pfister Hotel. Along with Stacy Scopano, market development manager for Tekla, Kanner will present on Field BIM(R), which employs field administration software on Tablet PCs to integrate site data into the building information model.

Specifically, Kanner and Scopano will explain how Skanska USA Building has used Field BIM and RFID technologies to track approximately 3,000 pre-cast concrete pieces that will form the seating bowl for the new Meadowlands stadium in New Jersey. They will be presenting on Friday, August 22 at 1:00 p.m.

Field BIM is the data model or information model generated by information from construction field operations, including work lists, punch lists, field reports, quality control and quality assurance, materials management, commissioning, and safety. With Field BIM, design and construction industry stakeholders can take advantage of this collaborative information model to optimize field operations during the construction phase. Once construction is complete, the owner and operator can use this same information for warranty management, customer service, re-commissioning, and general facilities management.

Skanska estimates this Field BIM solution will accelerate the construction schedule by 10 days, which translates into $1 million in savings. This is possible because the more accurate, up-to-date production information allows for better understanding of:

— What materials have been fabricated;
— Whether materials have passed quality assurance;
— When materials have arrived on the jobsite; and
— Which materials have been incorporated into the structure.

The status of each of these queries is vividly apparent through the use of different colors in the 3D model of the structure, which adds a fourth dimension of information. As a result, Skanska’s people never have to ask whether pre-cast concrete components are ready for the following week’s work, because answer is always readily apparent on the computer screen.

“To be competitive in today’s marketplace, owners and operators are demanding that increasingly sophisticated construction projects be delivered within strict boundaries that govern budgets, schedules, quality, safety and environmental sustainability,” Kanner said. “BIM is widely recognized as an important development in design and preconstruction management. With Field BIM, Vela is leveraging the model to improve the construction process itself, unlocking tremendous potential for improvements in productivity, risk reduction, and quality.”
