Latest release supports Microsoft Silverlight with cross-browser, cross-platform playback
MADISON, Wis., Jan. 29 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Sonic Foundry, Inc. (NASDAQ:SOFO) , a leader in automated rich media communications technology, today announced the company’s collaboration with Microsoft Corp. to add support for Microsoft Silverlight to Mediasite 4.3. With this latest release of the company’s award-winning and patented webcasting and content management platform, Sonic Foundry has taken the first step to utilize the next generation of cross platform multimedia technology to simplify and enhance the playing of rich media applications in a multiplatform world.
Silverlight is a cross-browser, cross-platform plug-in that supports rich media experiences on the web. Its seamless and quick installation provides a consistent Mediasite experience for both Windows and Macintosh users on a variety of browsers including Microsoft Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari.
“Sonic Foundry is a leader in rich media communication, and adding support for Silverlight will enable the company to maintain and further enhance this position,” said Brian Goldfarb, group product manager in the developer division at Microsoft. “Silverlight will bring a more powerful viewing experience to hundreds of thousands of higher education, corporate, healthcare and government users.”
“Mediasite’s latest release solidifies our commitment to continually enrich the user experience. Silverlight, with its cross platform ubiquity, supports fast, cost-effective delivery of high-quality rich media to all major browsers,” said Rimas Buinevicius, chairman and CEO of Sonic Foundry. “In addition, it takes advantage of streaming technology, helps ensure content security and supports the ability to track viewer playback activity — something not supported by every media player format.”
The 4.3 release marks the first announcement under Sonic Foundry’s next-gen education initiative. With its higher education Mediasite community now topping 500 colleges and universities, the company is focusing resources and efforts to fuel this convergence of technology and education.
