Ayurveda: The Science of Life and Longevity

Madison, Wis. — Sept. 15, 2008 – Twenty years ago, Yoga was somewhat unusual and exotic here in Wisconsin, but it has grown to become extremely popular and even mainstream. Like Yoga, Ayurveda is an ancient philosophy and therapy focused on disease prevention, health maintenance and balance – and fortunately for us, it is now available here in Madison .

Puja Wellness, Madison’s only Ayurvedic health center, has relocated to a beautiful facility at 3545 University Avenue and will celebrate this new beginning with an open house on Friday, Sept. 19, 2008. Puja Wellness offers an array of therapies including: Ayurveda, Yoga and massage. Puja Wellness includes a separate Ayurvedic shop (Puja Shop), open to the public and featuring eco-friendly and sustainably sourced products for the Yogic and Ayurvedic lifestyles needs. Puja Shop will carry herbs, body care products, cleansing and detox supplies, Yoga supplies, books, music and more.

Ayurveda is said to help those who apply its many practices to create optimal health by focusing on dynamic forces within their own constitution. Ayurvedic philosophy centers around the five elements (ether, air, water, fire and earth) and our natural energies (called vata, pitta or kapha). Ayurvedic Practitioners believe each of us has a uniquely different balance of these three energies within us; Ayurveda then seeks to heal by customizing treatment to honor those energies. Individualized treatments may include Ayurvedic body therapies, dietary and lifestyle recommendations, Yoga therapy, herbal products and supplements, as well as stress reduction techniques. Ayurveda is one of the oldest and most comprehensive systems of natural healing and has been practiced in India for over 6,000 years. It is sometimes called the sister science to Yoga.

To celebrate their grand opening, Puja Wellness owners Courtney Klick and Katy Martens invite the public to a free open house which will include Ayurvedic food and drink, free demonstrations of Thai Yoga Massage, Chiropractic postural evaluations, a raffle and silent auction. Kirtan music will be provided by Maa Shakti Das. Puja Wellness will offer discounts on services, consultations, products and more the week of September 15-19.

According to Courtney Klick, co-owner and Ayurvedic Practitioner, Ayurvedic therapies can help people who are struggling with physical and mental health concerns but who have failed to see results from other approaches. “Many come to us dissatisfied with personal attempts at fad diets and other practices geared to the masses,” says Klick. “Ayurveda addresses the unique imbalances of each individual to construct a treatment plan that specifically caters to each person’s needs, goals and concerns.”

In February 2007, Klick and Martens co-created Puja Wellness, LLC, with a desire to offer the community a variety of services in the areas of Ayurveda, Yoga, and massage. “Puja” is a Sanskrit word that means a ritual as an act of worship. Klick and Martens say they encourage clients to honor and worship themselves by making health and wellness a daily ritual. The purpose of their work is to empower, educate and inspire others on their journey to health, healing and happiness.

Klick and Martens are both Ayurvedic Practitioners, Yoga Therapists and Bodyworkers who offer a unique combination of services that are not offered elsewhere in Madison . Of these, Pancha Karma, a traditional cleansing and rejuvenation program, offers a myriad of benefits, including immune support, stress reduction, increased energy, elimination of toxins and a greater peace of mind.

In addition to owners Klick and Martens, holistic practitioners operating at Puja include Dr. Corinne Willner of Radiant Health Chiropractic, Don Jones of Thai Yoga Metta, Rebecca Printen of Seishin Body Work, and Margie Wilsman, Svaroopa Yoga Therapist.
