MADISON–State and local building code officials interested in influencing international building code development should consider attending the 2008 fall International Code Council (ICC) National Business Conference and Final Action for 2009 Code Hearings, to be held Sept. 17-23 at the Minneapolis Convention Center, 1301 2nd Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN.

“This conference offers the opportunity for code professionals to meet with national experts, share interests and experiences with their counterparts, and learn more about the code development process,” said Department of Commerce Deputy Secretary Aaron D. Olver. “In addition, by joining the ICC, members can vote on proposed changes to these codes.”

ICC codes are the basis of the Wisconsin Commercial Building Code. Wisconsin adopts five ICC codes with exceptions and additions. These codes are updated and revised regularly to reflect the needs of Wisconsin’s residents, building officials, and construction industry.

The ICC offers a variety of membership types and special membership arrangements for government building code representatives. Voting memberships are readily obtainable. There is no fee for attending final action public hearings and voting on changes. Registration is required, however. Interested persons can register at the door or at http://abm.iccsafe.org/2008/attendee_home.cfm

Any interested individual or group may submit a code change proposal and participate in code discussion. Final actions on the proposals are based on the aggregate count of all votes cast. This procedure ensures that ICC Codes reflect technical advances and equitably address the concerns of both the public and the industry.

The mission of the ICC is to provide the highest quality codes, standards, products, and services for the safety and performance of the built environment. To learn more about the conference and hearings, membership and benefits, visit the ICC website, www.iccsafe.org
