Wisconsin November Unemployment Rates Announced

Unadjusted Data

MADISON – Wisconsin’s Department of Workforce Development (DWD) Secretary Roberta Gassman announced today that Wisconsin’s unemployment rate for November 2007 was 4.8 percent.  The November rate was three-tenths of a percentage point higher than the October rate of 4.5 percent.  The national rate for November increased to 4.5 percent from 4.4 percent in October.

“Wisconsin’s labor market showed moderate improvement in November with an increase in employment of 4,000 from October,” Secretary Gassman said.  “Jobs are also up over the year, with the state adding 12,400 jobs since last November.  Our unemployment rate continues to be under 5 percent for the state, although we have seen slightly higher rates as a result of a national slow down in the economy.”

Total Wisconsin non-farm jobs decreased 7,100 over the month to 2,902,800 from October to November 2007.  Private sector jobs fell over-the-month by 9,200, led by a drop in Leisure & Hospitality jobs, which were down 9,000.  Retail Trade, up 10,500 in November, recorded the largest gain in jobs. Government jobs increased 2,100 in November.  Local government jobs were up 2,400, and federal jobs up 300, while state government was down 600.

Over the year, November 2007 had an increase of 12,400 jobs over November 2006, recording 2,890,400 jobs. Private sector jobs increased 21,000 over that time period, while government jobs decreased 8,600, of which 8,300 were in state government.  Service producing jobs increased by 19,400 over the year, led by Professional and Business Services, which went up 9,600 jobs and Leisure & Hospitality, which increased 9,400 jobs.  Manufacturing jobs are down 6,900 for the year.  Despite the credit squeeze, construction jobs are only down 300 jobs over the year.

Adjusted Data

The seasonally adjusted Wisconsin unemployment rate for November 2007 was 5.1 percent, down one-tenth of a point from 5.2 percent in October, and up four-tenths of a percentage point from November 2006.

Total state employment was up 16,100 from October to November and up 12,100 for November compared to one year ago.
