WisBusiness: Port Edwards paper mill to lay off 500

Domtar Corp. announced today that it will shut its mill in Port Edwards – near Wisconsin Rapids – and lay off nearly 500 workers by next summer.

The mill produces uncoated freesheet paper and has an annual production capacity of 165,000 tons. Officials at the Montreal-based company said production will be moved to what it described as “more efficient” plants. A facility in Ontario also is being reorganized. That move will cost 125 workers their jobs.

“We need to pursue the consolidation of our production capacity to improve our competitiveness in the North American market, given continued unfavorable economic conditions and a softening of demand for fine papers,” said Raymond Royer, president and chief executive officer of Domtar.
