A vote on a 2,900 hog operation in Crawford County could come as early as Dec. 7 amidst protests by some farmers and environmentalists.

About 200 people attended a hearing Monday night on the operation, to be run by A.V. Roth, east of Wauzeka. Another 50 letters of concern have been filed with the county.

Those protesting the operation are concerned about possible pollution from manure, odors, the effect on property values for neighbors and other factors.

Roth maintained he will meet all state and federal regulations in the operation. Several of his neighbors supported Roth, saying he has been responsible in operating a 1,450 hog operation.

The county Land Conservation Committee could vote at its December meeting, but has until Jan. 3 to make a decision.

A similar size hog operation drew protests in Vernon County earlier this year. That operation was approved, with some restrictions.
