Unadjusted Data
MADISON – Wisconsin’s Department of Workforce Development (DWD) Secretary Roberta Gassman announced today that Wisconsin’s unemployment rate for September 2007 was 4.6 percent. The September rate was three-tenths of a percentage point lower than the August rate of 4.9 percent. The national rate for September fell to 4.5 percent from 4.6 percent in August.
“The start of school and changing weather across the state were among the factors influencing Wisconsin’s labor market last month, leading to a three-tenths of a point drop in unemployment over-the-month,” Secretary Gassman said.
Total Wisconsin non-farm jobs increased 3,600 to 2,899,500 from August to September 2007. Private sector jobs fell over-the-month by 22,000, led by a drop in Leisure & Hospitality jobs, which were down 12,000. Most of the month’s increase came from a rise in Government jobs, which were up 25,600. Most of that increase, 20,900, came from teachers and staff returning to school and the impact on local government.
Over the year, September 2007 had an increase of 15,500 jobs over September 2006, which recorded 2,884,000 jobs. Private sector jobs increased 22,800 over that time period, while government jobs decreased 7,300. Service producing jobs increased by 21,800 over-the-year, led by Trade, which went up 7,600 jobs and Educational & Health Services, which increased 6,400 jobs. Goods producers lost 6,300 jobs, led by a decrease in Manufacturing of 4,900 for the year.
Adjusted Data
The seasonally adjusted Wisconsin unemployment rate for September 2007 was 5.2 percent, down slightly from 5.3 percent in August, and up five-tenths of a percentage point from September 2006.
Total state employment was up 20,100 from August to September and up 4,300 for September compared to one year ago.
