Governor Jim Doyle today announced grants totaling more than $2 million to help communities develop and adopt locally-created plans to address long-term needs, promote economic development, and guide future land use decisions. The Governor awarded the 2007 Comprehensive Planning, or “Smart Growth,” grants to 12 applicants that cover 145 counties, cities, villages, and towns with a cumulative population of over 350,000 people.
“Wisconsin’s Smart Growth program is a model for the nation,” Governor Doyle said. “It puts local governments and citizens in charge of their future, allowing local decisions to determine the direction that each community takes. We will continue to work with communities to help them build a sustainable future.”
The Comprehensive Planning Grant Program began in 2000, and since that time 964 communities in all areas of the state have been awarded grants to develop comprehensive plans. Communities of all sizes across Wisconsin have used comprehensive plans to increase development and keep growing, at the same time that they enhance their quality of life, protect the environment, and save tax dollars.
The Comprehensive Planning Grant Program is designed to encourage intergovernmental cooperation and public participation in the development of local plans. Grants are awarded to local units of government, tribes, and regional planning commissions. The projects require local matching contributions.
Grants are awarded on a competitive basis and administered by the Wisconsin Department of Administration. The department will host a series of comprehensive planning grant workshops this summer for communities interested in applying for 2008 grants.
