Cygnus Law Enforcement Technology Group Announces 2007 Innovation Award Winners

Cutting-edge products give advantage to law enforcement and military

FORT ATKINSON, Wis., Oct. 22 /PRNewswire/ — Consider the edge military and law enforcement personnel would gain if they could see through walls. Many lives might be saved. At the recent International Association of Police Chiefs Conference, Cygnus Business Media’s Law Enforcement Group honored just such a product, Camero’s revolutionary Through-Wall Imaging System, the Xaver(TM) 800, in its 2007 Innovation Awards. The Xaver(TM) 800 provides intuitive 3D video images of stationary and mobile objects behind walls. This situation awareness includes the layout of the room, how many people are present, where they are situated, and what they are doing.

In an effort to showcase ground-breaking law enforcement products designed to make officers more efficient, effective and safe, the Cygnus Law Enforcement Group awards top products in 17 categories each year. The Xaver(TM) 800 won in the Surveillance Category. Entries are judged on their innovativeness, productivity, quality, contribution, ease of use and maintainability by a panel of six distinguished law enforcement professionals from a variety of backgrounds. Judges noted they were impressed with the caliber of many of the products they reviewed.

“The response to these awards has been tremendous,” says Ronnie Garrett, editorial director of the Cygnus Law Enforcement Group. “Two-hundred-and- thirty entries were gathered from 179 companies, in the following categories of recognition: communications, computers, corrections, firearms, firearms accessories, forensics, hazmat, less-lethal, security, software, surveillance, tactical, traffic enforcement, training, uniforms and body armor, vehicle accessories and vehicles.”

Other items that received awards included the UltraVision’s MicroDetector in the Tactical Category, a portable motion detector, weighing just 8 ounces that can set up a spherical detection field up to 25 feet and can be buried under a few inches of earth. Movement detection can then be sent wirelessly to a receiver, PDA, laptop or police radio.

Protective Products International’s Ballistic Door Panels was awarded the winner in Vehicle Accessories Category. Together with Ford Motor Company, the panels were designed for the Crown Victoria Police Interceptor and are certified to stop all NIJ level 3A handgun rounds and most NIJ level 3 rifle rounds.

“It’s about time!” stated one of the distinguished judges. “We’ve been trying to teach our officers that doors are concealment, not cover. They will now be covered with doors that offer ballistic protection.”

“Congratulations to all the winners and finalists in the Cygnus Law Enforcement Group Innovation Awards,” says Patrick Bernardo, brand manager for the Cygnus Law Enforcement Group. “We appreciate your efforts to keep law enforcement professionals efficient and safe.”
