When: Tuesday, May 23, 2006

Where: 10:00 AM City Hall

What: Voces de la Frontera, Latino Health Organization, Wisconsin Citizen Action, and MICAH will hold a press conference on Tuesday, May 23, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. at City Hall to raise concerns about the impact of health care for US citizens and legal immigrants if the Governor signs SB 567 in to law. SB 567 would impose new citizenship verification requirements for the major public assistance programs in Wisconsin, including Medical Assistance, Badger Care, Senior Care, Food Stamps, SSI.

Despite the anti-immigrant rhetoric of the bill, the primary target affected by this legislation are US citizens and legal immigrants who have access to these programs while undocumented immigrants do not.

In addition Voces de la Frontera, MICAH, and Wisconsin Citizen Action will be unveiling their commitment to organize eligible low-income voters for the 2006 elections as part of a national effort to register one million new voters for the 2006 elections. This mobilization, in the wake of massive rallies, is called “Democracy Summer.”
