(Madison, Wis.) – Dana Lytle, principal and creative director at Planet Propaganda, served on the five-member panel of design leaders who judged thousands of entries and chose only 100 worthy of the “STEP Inside Design 100.” The final selections are featured in STEP‘s March/April issue.

One of STEP‘s largest issues of the year, “Design 100” is the only annual design competition to limit the number of winners featured in the issue to truly give each winning entry special recognition. Every designer whose work is honored also has the opportunity to share the story behind the design, explain the strategy, and elaborate on the ideas that led to the final, creative product. Each of the five judges also picked and was interviewed regarding a favorite entry.

Lytle believes that even the most beautiful graphic detail is powerless without a strategy, and that even the soundest strategy can benefit from some creative “hoobajoob.” Clients such as American Players Theatre, Bretford furniture and Gary Fisher mountain bikes agree with this philosophy, and rely on Lytle and Planet to build their brands upon it.

While judges are excluded from entering their own work in the STEP Inside Design 100, Planet and Lytle are frequently honored by the industry’s most prestigious publications and organizations. This year, Planet is one of only 10 firms selected from the graphic design industry for the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, National Design Triennial exhibition.

“We’ve been really impressed with Planet’s work and thought Dana was a great fit with the group. It can be a grueling day of judging, but everyone worked together well and had fun, too,” says Emily Potts, STEP Inside Design‘s editor.

In addition to Lytle, STEP Inside Design 100‘s other judges include: John Bielenberg, principal of C2 in San Francisco; Terry Marks, principal of Terry Marks Design in Seattle; Jilly Simons, principal of Concrete in Chicago; and DJ Stout, partner at Pentagram in Austin, Texas.

STEP Inside Design reaches a circulation of nearly 30,000 worldwide readers. Published by Dynamic Graphics Group, each issue includes profiles of visionary creatives, thoughtful analysis on business issues, and essays and commentaries on design’s most relevant questions.
