Planet Propaganda: Creates “Book of Summer” for American Players Theatre

(Madison, Wis.) – Planet Propaganda has designed and illustrated American Players Theatre’s annual Book of Summer. In addition to enticing audiences with a preview of APT’s 2006 performances on the outdoor stage, Planet created the piece as a tangible keepsake for those who return year-after-year. The theatre’s loyal following have established the Shakespearean repertory company of Spring Green, Wis., as one of the most popular outdoor classical theatres in the country.

Planet Propaganda has contributed 16 years of creativity and strategic thinking to securely position APT as part of an essential, summer experience: driving through rolling rural hills, dining on wine and cheese, enjoying a casual atmosphere set within the lush summer woods, walking uphill at sunset to the intimate 1,200-seat amphitheater, and watching celebrated classical theatre late into the night.

“The audience gets more than just a world-class Shakespearean performance,” says Dana Lytle, Planet co-founder and creative director. “APT is a complete experience, a whole afternoon or evening spent in the presence of art and nature.” By celebrating this experience, and the theatre’s unique place in the Wisconsin summer landscape, Planet conveys a consistent marketing message while finding inspiration for a fresh approach each year.

The 2006 Book of Summer features wood-cut illustrations by Planet’s Curtis Jinkins. Capturing the interplay of Mother Nature and human nature, the hand-wrought artwork, ornamental borders and type treatment are presented in warm, textured colors to resemble the tactile character of screen-printed reproductions. Jinkins also served as lead designer on the 24-page, 6×9-inch book, printed by Suttle/Straus.

The Book of Summer is mailed to 10,000 of APT’s previous ticket-holders. Recipients are offered individual tickets at a reduced rate before the season starts. Once the season begins, all tickets are sold at full price.
