A two-building lighting retrofit that reduced the amount of electric power it uses for lighting by 52% has brought Orion’s Environmental Stewardship Award to All Seals & Hose, a Milwaukee hose and seals distribution firm.

The change, in which 66 400-watt metal halide lamps were replaced by the same number of Orion six-tube T8 fluorescent Illuminator ® fixtures, dropped All Seals’ lighting power usage from an annual 92,070 kilowatt-hours (kWh) to 44,352. Power costs fell correspondingly.

The environmental basis of the award comes from the fact that power saved does not have to be generated at all, and that reduction means fewer substances released into the atmosphere.

In All, Seals’ case, the 47,718 kWh saved will mean that each year 47 tons of carbon dioxide, 13 tons of carbon, two-tenths tons of sulfur dioxide and one-tenth ton of nitrogen oxides — all pollutant products of power generation — will not enter the atmosphere.

Stated another way, the reduction is the air-scrubbing equivalent of a nine-acre forest ore removing eight cars from the road and the conservation equivalent of saving 3,939 gallons of gasoline per year.

“We appreciate receiving this award,” said All Seals & Hose vice-president Dominic Bartolone. “We’re a very environmentally-conscious company, both inside and outside our buildings and try to do what’s right.”

Bartolone said the change to Orion lighting had come because management had been concerned about energy costs, which seemed high. “We investigated our lighting, and found it would be worthwhile so we went ahead with the change. We put it in both buildings.”

“The new lighting has been great. We’re very satisfied with it, our electric bills have been lower at both buildings — and our employees like it too,” Bartolone concluded.

“The usual story is that you have to give up something to get something,” commented Orion president Neal Verfuerth. “Here, though, All Seals & Hose received better lighting and only had to ‘give up’ higher energy costs and pollutants into the bargain.”

“We congratulate them on this noteworthy achievement.”
