For slicing some 66,758 kilowatt-hours (kWh) off the power it uses for lighting by changing to an Orion lighting system — a reduction just over 50% — the Callenor Company of Menomonee Falls has been presented with the Orion Energy Services Environmental Stewardship Award.

But it didn’t start out that way. When first notified of the award, Callenor president Mike Weyer thought the numbers then presented didn’t seem right. “I don’t think we did this much, (changing)” he said. “And I don’t want to accept an award for something we didn’t do.”

A recheck and recalculation showed Weyer had been right. The 66,758 kWh figure — less than half the erroneous, though inadvertent total — was the result, which he was glad to accept.

“We appreciate the award,” Weyer said. “We’re always looking to improve in an environmentally-friendly way and it’s nice to receive recognition for it.”

The figure indicates the amount of electric power Callenor saves — just over 50% of what it used previously — in a year due to the change to Orion. The power saved does not have to be generated at all, and the pollution that would have been produced generating it does not go into the atmosphere at all. Hence the environmental benefits and stewardship award.

According to federal EPA formulas, the 66,758 kWh saved will mean that that 65 tons of CO2, 18 tons of carbon, one-third ton of sulfur dioxide and one-tenth ton of nitrogen oxides will not enter the air each year.

Stated another way, the power saving is the air-scrubbing equivalent of a 12-acre forest or taking 11 cars permanently off the road. It is also the conservation equivalent of saving 5,511 gallons of gasoline each year.

Weyer said Callenor employees liked the added light they had to work by and told of an unexpected bonus.

“We had a film crew in for our corporate video some time after the lighting project,” he said. “They told us we were the first company where they had shot that they didn’t need to put up extra lights.”

“What Callenor did represents what will be a major factor in our energy future,” commented Orion president Neal Verfuerth. “Cutting power consumption by half — while, I might add, getting much better light into the bargain — not only makes economic sense but energy sense as well.”

“Best of all, Mike Weyer’s company didn’t have to do without or give something up to get it. That’s how we like to see things work.”
