The Nohl Corporation of Milwaukee, a leading nonmetallic component and part machining/fabricating firm, has earned the Orion Environmental Stewardship Award for a recent 55% reduction in the amount of electric power it uses for lighting — some 125,167 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year — by changing to state-of-the-art T8 fluorescent lighting from Orion Energy Services of Plymouth.

Because power saved does not have to be generated at all, the power reduction produces environmental benefits. According to US EPA formulas, Nohl’s 125,167 kWh reduction means that some 122 tons of carbon dioxide, 33 tons of carbon, one half-ton of sulfur dioxide and 1/3 ton of nitrogen oxides — all pollutant by-products of power generation — will not go into the atmosphere each year.

Stated another way, the reduction is the air-scrubbing equivalent of a 23-acre forest or removing 20 cars permanently from the road. It is also the conservation equivalent of saving 10,333 gallons of gasoline per year.

“We appreciate the award, ” said Bob Leonard, purchasing agent for Nohl Corporation. “We’re always looking for ways to improve that are consistent with good environmental practices — after all, we live here, too.

All told, Nohl installed a total of 142 Orion fixtures. “They’re wonderful, they’re excellent,” said Leonard of the fixtures. “We couldn’t be happier with them. A great light. Some of the Orion lights have been in an office area for four years and we have not had to change one bulb (tube) yet.”

“Moves like Nohl made here are a win-all-around proposition,” commented Orion president Neal Verfuerth. “Nohl wins because they received better lighting that cost less than half to operate. But with the environmental aspects, we all win.”

“All of us are also winners when someone takes a chunk of power like Nohl’s 125,167 kWh off the power grid because it tends to lessen the upward pressure on electric rates — and that’s an issue we’re all facing. We congratulate them on this achievement.”

The Nohl Corporation, located at 6360 N. 60th St., Milwaukee, which specializes in nonmetallic machined parts and product components, has been supplying high-quality, products from thermoset composites, engineered plastics and inorganic thermal insulating materials to leading manufacturers of electrical apparatus and special machinery for over 50 years.
