Madison gains high tech firms

Madison now has 475 high-tech businesses, up 15 from 2005, that employ
about 27,000.

According to the 2006 Madison Gas & Electric Directory of High-Tech
Companies, those firms now employ about 9 percent of the area workforce.
That’s a big gain from when the first directory came out two decades ago.
Back then, Madison had about 7,000 high-tech workers who were employed by
about 170 companies.

Though UW-Madison produces many bright graduates, officials said it can be
difficult to find talented workers to fill positions. Funding to pay for
research and development and grow companies – from both public and private
resources – is also a problem, they said.
