Iron River – The Iron River Area Chamber of Commerce is inviting barbecue competitors from near and far to compete on Saturday, 17 June, at its third annual Rib Challenge, which promises awards, cash prizes and plenty of food and drink for public admirers of BBQ delights. The event will be held on U.S. Highway 2, beside the Bayfield Electric building at the west end of town.

“Actually, we have four categories of meat,” explained Chamber Vice President Michelle Drougas, who’s overseeing the competition. “Spare ribs, pork shoulder, chicken and beef brisket – these four categories represent what we all like to barbecue, and we all love to eat.” As the rules explain, (which can be found on the Chamber website at http://www.iracc.com), competitors can use any cooking technique – from spice rubs to sauces and marinades, and any fuel, from LP gas to wood smokers and charcoal. “We’ll be judging the results,” Drougas said, “not how you cooked your meat.” With first place cash prizes in each category, plus a grand aggregate cash prize, it’s possible for a competitor to take home up to $600 and a shelf full of trophies and plaques. “I want to emphasize,” Drougas added, “anyone over 18 years of age can cook in the Rib Challenge. Just get registered on our website or at the Chamber office, pay a modest entry fee, and bring down your grill.” The office phone is 715-372-8558 or 800-345-0716.

During the competition, a variety of restaurants and vendors will offer the public their best BBQ – especially ribs – while kids can play at an Inflatable Carnival area and moms and dads can shop at a special arts and crafts fair across the street. “This will be a fun day for the whole family,” Drougas enthused, “especially with Iron River’s Summerfest adding still more events all across town. There will be something here for everyone.”
