(MADISON) – HospiceCare Inc. will begin training a new group of in-home volunteers and prepare participants to directly assist patients with life-limiting illnesses and their families. Those interested are invited to apply by the April 25, 2006, deadline. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and must participate in a screening process prior to training. Due to ongoing construction, locations will be confirmed closer to the scheduled training.

In-home volunteers provide companionship to patients living at home or in other residential, assisted living or long-term care facility. They also provide respite for caregivers. The in-home volunteer training will take place over five days: May 9, 11, 16, 18 and 23 from 5:30 – 9:30 p.m. Topics that will be addressed include the role of the volunteer; death, dying, grieving and loss; family dynamics and boundaries; spirituality; symptom management and standard precautions; and transfer techniques.

Please note that family members of HospiceCare patients must wait at least one

year after the death of their loved one before becoming a volunteer.

Individuals may also wish to volunteer their time to help with administrative tasks, greet visitors, or help to plan special events. To learn more about the upcoming training or to receive more information about administrative volunteer opportunities at HospiceCare, call Shawnee Parsil at (608) 276-4660.
