Governor Jim Doyle released the following statement on today’s report from the state Department of Public Instruction regarding the suspension of state funds to Northside High School in Milwaukee:

“My first concern is for parents who have to scramble to find another school for their kids – and for the kids who may now have to scramble to catch up to the grade level of their peers. But this demonstrates exactly why we need greater accountability in our choice schools.

“We all want better educational choices for our parents – and that’s why I support choice schools and raising the cap.

“But parents and Wisconsin taxpayers deserve to know that when we spend their hard-earned taxpayer dollars on schools, it is money well spent, and their kids are getting a good education. Greater accountability is the way to do it.

“It is time for the Legislature to support the common-sense accountability measures that I have proposed in my school choice package, so that we can be sure that all of our schools are providing the quality of education our kids deserve.”
