At an annual meeting of the Wisconsin REALTORS Association today, Governor Jim Doyle signed Senate Bill 253, allowing homeowners to rebuild a nonconforming structure, such as a dock or pier, if it is destroyed by mold, snow, or ice.

Previously, such a structure could only be rebuilt if it was located in a shoreland area regulated by county shoreland zoning and only if it was destroyed by wind, fire, flood, or vandalism.

“SB 253 will help protect the home values of hardworking Wisconsin families,” Governor Doyle said. “Home buyers no longer have to worry that a home they’re interested in has a pier or dock that may not be rebuilt, and lenders and insurance providers no longer need to worry about the risks involved in taking on such a property.”

The Governor thanked Senator Cathy Stepp and Representative Dan Meyer, as well as the Wisconsin Restaurant Association, the Wisconsin Builders Association, and the Wisconsin REALTORS Association, for their support of SB 253.
