Flat Top Grill, a create-your-own stir-fry restaurant, is the first business to lease space in a new retail building at Hilldale Shopping Center. The building is near the south entrance of the existing mall where Sundance Cinema will be located and next to the four-level Arboretum Parking Garage, which recently opened.

Flat Top Grill, to open in early May, will specialize in designer stir-fry where diners fill their bowls with ingredients they select and go to the flat top grill where chefs prepare their food. Diners then wait at their table for their meal to be delivered. The menu includes traditional and exotic fruits and vegetables, fish, meat, poultry, rice, noodles, house-made sauces, appetizers and deserts as well as a full bar featuring tiki drinks, urban cocktails, and Asian beers.

Headquartered in Oak Park, Ill., Flat Top Grill has nine locations in Northern Illinois, Arlington, Va., and Fort Wayne, Indiana. Founder Keene Addington, who developed the concept while managing a restaurant in Hong Kong, said Hilldale is an excellent location, especially with its proximity to the planned Sundance Cinema just across the walkway. The fast casual restaurant offers healthy food in a relaxing environment, he said.

The restaurant, to be open for lunch and dinner daily, will seat 103 people. It will employ about 40 full time people and 20 part-time staff.

Robert Fink, senior vice president of development for Joseph Freed & Associates, Hilldale owners, said Flat Top Grill will offer another restaurant opportunity at the redeveloped Hilldale. Construction will start this spring for the upscale Fleming’s Steakhouse and Wine Bar, which will be built at the corner of University Avenue and Midvale Boulevard.

The redevelopment includes the existing Hilldale Shopping Center, plus an additional 70,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space and 40 Hilldale Row condominium homes. For construction updates: www.hilldale.com
