Located near Milwaukee, the health system provides medical care for children through its flagship member, Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, as well as family support and mental health services through Children’s Service Society of Wisconsin. The health system, with operations spanning multiple sites, deployed PeopleSoft Enterprise Human Capital Management, PeopleSoft Enterprise Financial Management and PeopleSoft Enterprise Supply Chain Management to automate its largely paper-based systems, driving improved productivity, facilitating financial reporting and streamlining materials management. Built on a single Oracle infrastructure, the health system’s implementation integrates information from across the organization for improved data integrity and comprehensive business intelligence.

“By leveraging Oracle(R) Applications to streamline and automate our business processes, we are able to expand our focus on efforts designed to continually strengthen the quality of care we deliver to our patients,” said Children’s Hospital and Health System Vice President and Chief Information Officer Michael Jones. “Oracle provides the operational backbone needed to help improve efficiency and business intelligence, and support quality improvements.”

Connect Operations, Drive Efficiencies

Children’s Hospital and Health System implemented Oracle’s PeopleSoft Enterprise Human Capital Management to help increase staff productivity and empower employees with greater self-sufficiency via automated, self-service functionalities. Prior to deployment, the organization ran on a combination of manually intensive human resources processes and non-integrated systems. The new HR system allows the health system to streamline business processes ranging from capital expenditures to recruitment. For example, PeopleSoft Enterprise Talent Acquisition Manager allows job applicants to update personal information online, which streamlines the recruiting process and speeds time-to-hire. Further, the HR system now interfaces directly with health plan administrators for employee benefit plans, training and wellness initiatives — increasing employee satisfaction by reducing cycle times and improving services.

PeopleSoft Enterprise Financial Management allows Children’s Hospital and Health System to help ensure accurate financial reporting, run internal accounting controls and increase financial staff productivity. Specifically, PeopleSoft Enterprise General Ledger and PeopleSoft Enterprise Payables make it possible to connect directly with financial institutions for cash management, as well as regulatory agencies for reporting and compliance.

The health system further enhanced its ERP system with PeopleSoft Enterprise Supply Chain Management to efficiently manage supply inventory, enhance materials services and improve clinical staff productivity. The system integrates directly with its group purchasing organization to help reduce supply costs and increase processing efficiencies. For example, the new supply chain management solutions interfaces with a third-party barcode-based operating room solution and personal digital assistant (PDA)-based supply cart management system to automate inventory management, allow real-time integration, enable decreased processing times and allow clinical staff to focus on providing care.

“Healthcare organizations today face intense pressure to improve patient care while reducing operating expenses,” said Oracle Vice President of Health Industries Mychelle Mowry. “Oracle applications and technology help healthcare providers, like Children’s Hospital and Health System, to streamline operations and expand business intelligence, freeing resources to ensure continual improvement of service to the people that need care.”
