(Madison)…Representative Sue Jeskewitz (R-Menomonee Falls) announced the unanimous passage Thursday of Assembly Bill 805 (AB 805), which allows the Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS) to charge needy and worthy victims of Hurricane Katrina resident tuition.

Currently, the WTCS allows a number of qualified needy and worthy students from other states to receive resident tuition, as long as the total number of those students does not to exceed 0.5 percent of the full-time statewide enrollment. “Due to this tragic natural disaster, many students have lost not only their colleges, but their homes and economic support as well,” stated Jeskewitz.

AB 805 allows WTCS to accommodate these Katrina victims without displacing other candidates for the needy and worthy out-of-state student designation. “This is not free money, but it lets us do our part to assist devastated students who are trying to put their lives back on track,” added Jeskewitz.

If AB 805 passes the Senate and is signed into law, the WTCS will have the authorization to offer in state tuition to this category of students for the next two and a half years.
