Planet Propaganda: Honored by Chicago Anthenaeum with “Good Design” Award for Book of Lore

Madison, Wis.) Planet Propaganda’s limited edition book design for American Players Theatre’s Book of Lore won a 2005 GOOD DESIGN® Award from the Chicago Anthenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design. Planet’s book design stood out from the hundreds of international industrial and graphic design entries ranging from an airplane to a paper clip. The Book of Lore will be displayed at the museum in 2006 and on its website at www.chi-athenaeum.org.

For 15 years, Planet Propaganda has contributed its creativity and strategic thinking to help the American Players Theatre (APT) outdoor Shakespearean repertory company of Spring Green, Wis., position itself as part of an essential, summer experience: driving through rolling rural hills, dining on wine and cheese, enjoying a casual atmosphere set within the lush summer woods, and watching celebrated classical theater. The resulting loyal following and continually increasing attendance have made APT one of the most popular outdoor classical theater in the country.

For the 25th Anniversary Season, Planet created a limited edition book celebrating the theater’s first quarter-century tapping APT’s collective memory of loyal patrons, cast, and crew to assemble a culmination of anecdotes and artwork, bound and printed as the Book of Lore. Aptly titled, the theater describes the volume as “a book of mythic vision, revelation and outrageous joy.”

“The books simulates the experience an APT performance as it takes you on a winding journey, off the beaten track, away from the familiarity of the city and into the darkening forest where the theater comes alive and sweeps you away with it,” explains Dana Lytle, Planet’s co-founder and creative director. “Long after you leave, the experience lingers in your thoughts. The Book of Lore savors those thoughts, those experiences and reminds you of the relevancy and vibrancy of the theater.”

In addition to the Chicago Anthenaeum’s award, Planet Propaganda’s book design for APT’s Book of Lore was selected from more than 900 entries to be featured in American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) annual competition “50 Books/50 Covers.” It also will be displayed at the National Design Center in New York, at the Denver Art Museum and as part of a nationally traveling exhibit, archived online at www.aiga.org, and published in the anthology 365: AIGA Year in Design 26.
